3000 miles later...

3000 miles later and I've made it too my destination in Guatemala [well I made it back on the 6th, but this is my first post since then, sorry for the delay :)]. My travels through Mexico and Guatemala were mostly without complication. And by 'mostly' I mean that nothing went wrong...until I was on a steep, narrow, winding road with no shoulder and my brake tube snapped. Talk about a gut wrenching moment. I was around 5 hours from my destination  of Jocotenango, Guatemala. As I was coming around a bend, I noticed a line of deep potholes--all lined up perfectly with my driver side wheel. It was too late to swerve by the time I noticed them and I guess the impact was a little too much for el carro. And my brake pedal began bottoming out. Thankfully, within 0.5 a kilometer there was a turn in the road with a large enough area that I could pull off the road safely. The 10 or so kilometers before that had nothing. Other than the overwhelming feeling of needing to vom...

Support my 6-month trip to Guatemala

In my blog’s first entry I mentioned my exciting plans that I will be heading down to Guatemala in September for a 6-month long visit. During this time. I will be helping out around the educational organization Paso a Paso , learning more about the families and the community we work with, and working with Paso a Paso’s founders to develop plans for the future. I will be traveling to Guatemala on a volunteer-basis and, thus, will have no income during these 6 months. Taking into account travel, housing, food, daily necessities, and supplies, I estimate that the trip will cost around $3,000.  Thankfully, a portion of this amount has already been sponsored by Guided Steps , Faith Lutheran Church , and my personal coffers. But I really need your help in rallying support for the remainder. Can you please help? To help raise funds to sponsor this trip, we have launched a crowdfunding campaign with Generosity. You can help by: Sponsoring a portion of this trip by going to my Gene...

The first post--An introduction

Look at me now mom! It was just a few years ago (ok, closer to 10) when I called you crazy for asking me to go to a "third-world country" with you on a mission trip. Little did we know then how Guatemala and her people would capture my heart. Now in a short amount of time I will be heading down to Guatemala for six-months to work with Paso a Paso , an education based non-profit. This blog will be a place for me to share about my adventures, the people I meet, and anything else that comes to mind. I'll do my best to regularly post updates, but I can't make any promises at this point. If you would like to be notified by email when a new post has been published, sign-up for my newsletter near the top of the page or send an email to blog@nickgaston.com . -Nick p.s. I will also be publishing blog posts on Guided Steps Ministry's blog while I am in Guatemala. You can find those at www.guidedsteps.org/blog
